Ya Rona Digital Programmme is aimed at empowering and upskilling communities on basic digital literacy. This programme is intended to complement the existing programmes offered through the NEMISA CoLabs across South Africa. The programme is carried out in a manner that allows for active community participation by establishing and adopting digital platforms within the targeted areas.
In January 2020, the pilot project was launched in Bulwer, NDZ municipality, KZN and training of the 36 recruited digital ambassadors is currently underway. These candidates will then get an opportunity to train their communities in digital skills that they learned. The stakeholders in the KZN province are DUT CoLab, NDZ municipality and KZN EDTEA. It is aimed for the programme to create a national footprint for ICT skills development by rolling out to other provinces in South Africa.
Targeted beneficiaries are from socio-economically excluded societies, being unemployed youth, women and people with disabilities. The programme recruits, trains, empowers, dispatch and support digital change makers in their respective communities to become digital ambassadors.
